Born and raised on the Sunshine Coast, British Columbia, David Hauka's many childhood
memories both bittersweet and pleasant, ensured that he question belief systems, behaviors and
develop his own rules about what works and what doesn't.
Introduced to the film industry via a late night rendezvous at Pacific Cinematique in '79, Hauka
after touring Europe applied to the SFU Film Workshop and that's when the magic began.
Hauka's initial employment in the movie industry was as an actor in the locally shot television
series, The Beachcombers and later in Highlander. Finding that he enjoyed being behind the
scenes much more suited to his personality, he quickly moved behind the camera to work on his
producing and directing techniques. His first winning film was "Solus" which screened at the 1986
Chicago International Film Festival and received the Gold Plaque in the Arts. Those early
experiences and that burning interest, enabled him to mature into the Director/Producer that we
know today
In his formative years as director and producer, he worked with some "A" listed talent including
Christopher Plummer, Jon Voight, Ellen Burstyn, Alfre Woodard, Leslie Neilsen, and Swoozey
Kurtz to name a few, with several of the films and series winning many awards and nominations.
Impolite, Whale Music, A Wrinkle in Time, and The Five People You Meet In Heaven, were just a
few of the many titles that he worked on.
Disney, Miramax, Universal and MGM provided a strong corporate training ground which helped
to increase his management skill sets.
Of late, Hauka has focused his energies on his more creative side working on his artistic style
and the many ways it can be portrayed utilizing his film and television experience.
After losing both his parents within a year of each other in the early 90's, he struggled to find a
way to honour their memories and challenge his creative abilities. The past few years has seen
him concentrating on creating his own masterpiece - a melancholy celebration of life with exactly
the right sensibilities, melding film, music, and text with a precision that he identifies as
cinematic essay.
An avid reader of philosophy, science, evolution and astronomy all provided directorial vision
for his first self directed and produced film, CERTAINTY.
CERTAINTY is a quintessential reminder of our mortality, and a brief glimpse into the past.
A recent graduate at the University of BC, Hauka received his Masters in Fine Arts in Film and
Creative Writing
Quite the wordsmith, Hauka forcefully expresses himself when enjoying even the simplest
routines like chatting over a cappuccino. Off on tangents he will go, forging new thoughts,
expressions and opinions that actually add to his charm.
His culinary interests range from the Japanese and Asian influences, to enjoying Indian curried
favourites at Vij's a Vancouver favourite and Hauka's neighborhood haunt. His palate doesn't
stop there and also includes French and Italian cuisines. Diverse and eclectic are the terms that
comes to mind when thinking of David Hauka.
His travels include remote and exotic locations including France, Egypt, Peru, England and of
course the centre of the universe that is NY.
It's the looking back that will get you every time, and the one thing that HAUKA has no intention
of doing. His future lies straight ahead, and already he's looking towards his next project.
Hauka is currently on sabbatical so that he can continue to create beautiful art.
We can expect to see more great reflective, creative visuals from this consummate Director.
